Well, if the free version doesn't have ftp access and the workaround needs upload via ftp and not the option that Joffm showed (not sure if this is also possible), then there is little you can do, besides maybe install the XAMPP version of Limesurvey on your computer, for testing purposes.

Provide your LS version and where it is installed (own server, uni/employer, SaaS hosting, etc.).
Always provide a LSS file (not LSQ or LSG).
