LimeSurvey version: LimeSurvey Community Edition 7.0.4+260620 (DB version 708)
Own Server
Survey theme/template: Vanilla
==================Hello,We are having serious issues after upgrading our self-hosted LimeSurvey installation from LimeSurvey 6 to LimeSurvey 7 using ComfortUpdate.Current version:LimeSurvey Community Edition 7.0.4+260620 (DB version 708)Environment:
  • Self-hosted installation
  • Apache 2.4.68
  • MariaDB 11.4.12
  • PHP 8.1
  • Linux server
  • Using the classic editor
  • Production environment with many users and approximately 60 active surveys
Because this is a live production server, we cannot easily perform drastic tests, reinstallations or major changes.Problems observedAfter upgrading from version 6 to version 7, several administration functions stopped working:
  1. Question groups in the survey structure cannot be expanded.
  2. Clicking on groups or questions does nothing.
  3. Questions and groups cannot be reordered because drag and drop does not work.
  4. In dropdown/list questions, answer options and subquestions cannot be deleted.
  5. Several buttons and interactive elements are displayed correctly but do not respond when clicked.
Interestingly, right-clicking a group or question and selecting "Open link in new tab" works correctly, and the question editor opens normally. This suggests that URLs, permissions and editor pages themselves are working, but some interactions in the administration interface are failing.Already tested
  • Chrome, Firefox and private/incognito mode.
  • Different users.
  • Existing surveys and newly created surveys.
  • Clearing LimeSurvey cache.
  • Deleting and regenerating
    Code:
    /tmp/assets
    .
  • Clearing
    Code:
    /tmp/runtime
    caches.
  • Running Data Integrity Check, with no relevant issues found.
  • Testing both
    Code:
    urlFormat='get'
    and
    Code:
    urlFormat='path'
    .
  • Enabling debug mode.
The issue persists.I have also found another discussion in this forum describing a very similar problem with the survey structure editor after upgrading to version 7, but unfortunately it does not appear to have been resolved.Has anyone experienced similar problems after upgrading from LimeSurvey 6 to 7.0.4+260620?Could this be a known regression affecting the classic administration interface?
Any ideas or safe workarounds would be greatly appreciated, especially since this is a production installation with many active surveys.

  1. In dropdown/list questions, answer options and subquestions cannot be deleted.
I had the same issue yesterday on my Git/dev version.
I checked again today: I have the same issue, need to reload the question page multiple times to fix.
Can you report the issue, please?
1st issue reported : bugs.limesurvey.org/view.php?id=20617

Else: you update a major version without testing?

Thank you very much for checking.

Yes, unfortunately this is a production installation and we relied on ComfortUpdate and the fact that version 7 was marked as stable.

We do have backups and fortunately surveys are still working for participants, but several administration functions became unusable immediately after the upgrade.

The issue with deleting answer options seems to match what you are experiencing. However, in our installation we also cannot:

- expand question groups,
- reorder questions/groups using drag & drop,
- click normally on questions/groups in the structure editor.

Only opening links in a new tab works.

I've also checked issue #20617.

Thank you for confirming that at least part of the problem can be reproduced outside our installation.

I can, no idea here.

I checked the browser console while reproducing the issue.

No new errors appear in the console when:

- expanding a question group,
- clicking on a question or group,
- trying to reorder questions/groups using drag & drop.

The only messages shown are:

- JQMIGRATE: Migrate is installed, version 3.6.0
- A layout warning:
"Layout was forced before the page was fully loaded"
- A source map warning (404) for jquery-migrate.min.map.

I also checked the JavaScript environment:

- jQuery.fn.jquery returns "3.7.1"
- typeof window.LS returns "object"
- typeof $.fn.sortable returns "function"

So jQuery, the LimeSurvey JavaScript object and the sortable library all appear to be loaded correctly.

The behaviour remains exactly the same:

- question groups cannot be expanded,
- clicking normally on groups or questions does nothing,
- drag & drop does not work,
- opening the same links in a new browser tab works correctly.

Additional information:

- Tested in Chrome and Firefox, including private/incognito mode.
- Tested with different users.
- Existing surveys and newly created surveys are both affected.
- LimeSurvey assets and runtime caches were deleted and regenerated.
- LSCache was flushed.
- Data Integrity Check did not reveal anything relevant.
- The issue appeared immediately after upgrading from LimeSurvey 6 to LimeSurvey 7 using ComfortUpdate.

One correction regarding my previous message: the server is running LiteSpeed, not Apache.

The issue with deleting answer options appears to match issue #20617, but the survey structure problems persist independently.

Yes, unfortunately this is a production installation and we relied on ComfortUpdate and the fact that version 7 was marked as stable.

I mean, ComfortUpdate does what it says. It makes updates more comfortable. However, I don't think it was created to guarantee that all costum installations out there will work perfectly fine.

I never had any issues with Comfort Update so far, but I also avoid major updates from versions to versions (e.g. 6 to 7). At least I would create a copy of the production environment and make a test update before upgrading to a major release. It might have been marked as stable, but updates have their own rules, they don't always play by the book, especially when we talk about custom installations. If Limesurvey has an important role in your company, I personally highly recommend to test before major updates, just to be on the safe side.

And about "stable": Stable often means different things to different people. I personally wait a couple of releases after "stable" for production environments, based on past experiences.

Help us to help you!
  • Provide your LS version and where it is installed (own server, uni/employer, SaaS hosting, etc.).
  • Always provide a LSS file (not LSQ or LSG).
