==================

Hello,

I'm trying to use ComfortUpdate to update an old installation of LimeSurvey 2.00 Build 130406. However, in the updates section, I see the message “There are currently no new versions of LimeSurvey available,” and there is no option to perform the update.

How can I update this version using ComfortUpdate?

Thank you and best regards

I highly doubt that comfort update in 2026 still supports Limesurvey 2.0.

Your version of Limesurvey was released on April 6 2013, so more than 13 years ago. This is a little bit like wanting to update from Windows 7 to Windows 11. Most probably this won't work either.

The Limesurvey was 2.x. end of life probably in 2018 or something.

The developers of Comfort Update probably have excluded 2.x (and probably even 3.x, but not sure) for a long time.

In any way, if you are a paying customer of Limesurvey GmbH, you can ask their support directly, as they are responsible for the Comfort Update.

But you are probably on the free tier of Comfort Update, otherwise you probably wouldn't be with a 2.0 version.

I think you will have to do a manual update. And as this version is pretty old, you might have to go step by step.

I would make a copy of your current (ancient) version and test with the copy. Or make a copy of the database and try to install LS 6 with this database and see what happens. Good luck.

I highly recommend to keep up with the versions to avoid these issues. 13 years without updates and security patches is a long time for a software that is accesible via the internet.

Help us to help you!
  • Provide your LS version and where it is installed (own server, uni/employer, SaaS hosting, etc.).
  • Always provide a LSS file (not LSQ or LSG).

Hi Holch

Thank you very much for your reply. Sometimes, things aren’t what they seem. This LimeSurvey installation has been unused for over 10 years and is hosted on an official server that I don’t have access to.

During this time, we’ve had newer versions running on other hosting services and have conducted hundreds of thousands of surveys.

But the time has come when it would be best to move the service back to the original hosting provider.

Getting in touch with the tech support team and obtaining the necessary permissions to perform a new installation could take me weeks. But if I could use ComfortUpdate, I wouldn’t need anything else and could get it done in an hour.
I don’t even need a copy of the database. Everything it contains is perfectly dispensable.

The truth is that I do pay to use ComfortUpdate. I'm going to check with the LimeSurvey team to see if they have a solution.

Thanks again for your reply.
Best regards

Understood. So it is more to get around the bureacracy than to use this specific installation. So, yes, being able to run CU might give you a headstart there. But I am not very optimistic that it will work with such an old installation. But I think only the Limesurvey support can help you there, so best open a support ticket with them.

The truth is that I do pay to use ComfortUpdate. I'm going to check with the LimeSurvey team to see if they have a solution.

If you are a paying customer, they should at least give you a response about feasibility. My guess is that it won't work, but it doesn't cost you anything to ask.

Good luck. Fingers crossed that I am wrong and too pessimistic.

If you would get this migration done in one hour it would be a wonder. Even if Comfortupdate would offer you updates and upgrades you would need to upgrade PHP and database versions too. Your new old provider might be needed to provide such upgrades during then upgrade. At least if you want to aim for LimeSurvey 6.x.

Good point, jelo. Had not thought about that. Another hurdle.

Thanks, holch and jelo,

You were both right. The Limesurvey technical team has confirmed that it’s not possible to update such an old version using ComfortUpdate.
I see mountains of bureaucracy on the horizon. Sometimes I hate this job...
