We have removed the installation, downloaded the package again and reinstalled limesurvey.
The problem continues.
My bet: you have debug mode on, so asset manager off, so webrowser cache filled with the old CSS that doesn't fit anymore the HTML flow.
Solution: turn debug mode off, or refresh your cache.
The problem does not seem to be this.
We cleared the cache and started the application. The same problem occurred.
We use Chrome.
We also tested on Firefox and Internet Explorer.
In all the same problem occurs.
well, when updating manually, a lot of problems can happen, hard to say what...
a lot of people installed or updated to 2.56.1 without any problem.
If you're using LimeSurvey in a professional context, you'd rather use comfortUpdate.
Maybe not all files are uploaded correctly? this often happens when uploading via FTP.
Best method is to upload the zip file (or tar.gz) and then unzip it on the server. I experience less errors with that and it is a lot quicker anyway.
If this is also not the problem: No idea. Seems to work fine for others, haven't seen this error on the forum before. So I would guess it has to do with your individual configuration of the server.

Provide your LS version and where it is installed (own server, uni/employer, SaaS hosting, etc.).
Always provide a LSS file (not LSQ or LSG).

You can try to : after manual update : delete all directory in tmp/assets/ directory
