I have used assessment scoring satisfactorily to "weight" answers, and can display the results of this using {ASSESSMENT_CURRENT_TOTAL} but I am struggling to understand how I can get EM to read those scores and write to the database. If this is not possible, can anyone please share the knowledge of how to use EM to calculate, read and write scores based on responses. In detail, please, for the hard of thinking!

You can e.g. use the question type "Equation" to save EM related stuff.

you can also use {ASSESSMENT_CURRENT_TOTAL} keyword directly in the question text field of an equation question... if this (hidden or not) question is located on the next page (that means this is not working with "all-in-one" survey display).
