Hi,

I would like to know if there exists a maintenance mode or another recommended way to lock out users during an upgrade? The upgrade manual does not mention anything like that...

I am not aware of a maintenance mode like e.g in Wordpress, where users are blocked to ensure they arent't posting on Wordpress while updating.

you can configure your own maintenance page and set a redirect rule in your htaccess file, for all users outside your IP/network ...
