I am not absolutely sure if the DB gets updated from 2.06 to 2.5. If not, that mentioned approach should work fine.

I also had problems with the RC (unintentinally installed RC).
Now after 'downgrade' we running stable 2.06 with 2.5 DB; up to now without problems.
