I have helped an organisation that wants to check whether their clients have the correct documents for a certain procedure.
The survey is somewhat large (80 questions) with roughly 10 requiring the upload of 20 documents.
The users have complained that while they prepared the answers and uploaded docs, these did not save, costing them a lot of time.
Did others encounter an issue with non-saved answers? Any suggestions/workarounds?

Have you try to reproduce the issue. Uploading files can break in a lot of ways. Bug in LimeSurvey, wrong suffixes, serverside issues caused by the wrong temporary upload folder etc. I would ask the people which complained about what browser they have and what exaclty they experienced.
But first I would create a small survey with an uploadquestion and try to reproduce the issue. If that worked I would ask others to test.
I currently see no recent bug reports about the upload question.
