I typed my survey subquestions in English and German, both happen to have this messy code (see attached).
Could anyone help me out here, and let me know how I can remove them?

Hi,
it is difficult to help you, if you do not answer the questions about your LimeSurvey version, where it is hosted and the used theme.
And at least you should provide a lss export of this question with the strange characters.

So, have a look at the source code of the subquestions by clicking the pencil right of the subquestion text

Sorry, not reproducable.

Did you try a different theme (vanilla, bootswatch), or a different browser?

That looks like the hyphenation-character is missing in your browser.

When I look at the question the automatic hyphenation is working and showing the hyphenation character "-".
I recommend to check again with a default theme of LimeSurvey. Perhaps there is a font used which don't have that sign. Not very common, but who knows without checking.

Yes, it seems to be a problem with my browser. I tried different themes and the default one, it doesn't work. But as soon as I changed the browser, it works. So this problem won't affect me later if I distribute the survey right?

The issue will affect all respondents which use the same browser as you. What browser is used?

I added the hyphen manually to fix this problem, it works.

But consider different (smaller) devices where the hyphen will be inserted somewhere else.
I used Chrome Version 97.0.4692.99
