The download package contain the requirements for each release. Won't change that often, but the manual might be not contain the correct requirements for every release (older or newer).
So I double check via the release notes in the download section.

Choosing a different provider for the LimeSurvey installation.
It can be plan from Limesurvey.org where you don't need to install and configure LimeSurvey.
There might be other providers which also provide LimeSurvey as a Service.
Or you can use a webhosting package from a generic provider and install LimeSurvey on your own.

Hi. I updated the PHP (that was the only issue according to my hosting provider) I am now using Filezilla to transfer the files across and following the installation instructions. They are very useful! However I am completely lost with setting the directory permissions...I am using a Linux system.

any advice for this next step appreciated
Cheers,
Jack

That depends on the webserver-PHP-combo. There are different technical concepts, how webserver and php are glued together. So it can be insecure 777 or more secure permission settings.
That should be documented by your provider.

Thanks jelo. Unfortunately my provider are absolutely useless , to the point where I dont trust their support team. Is there any more advice you could give me on how to move forwards with this or where else to look for guidance? What happens if I don't set directory permissions as per the installation guidelines?

You are probably with one of the big mass webhosters. Their business is masses and they are not prepared (nor do they advertise) to give individual support (below 10 Dollars per month). Now if you are paying considerably more than 10 dollars per month and they advertise premium support you should consider to complain or switch hosts.

Try something like 755 first. This should usually work, just as described in the manual. No one here can give you specific help, because we don't know your server setup.

An other option is hosting your survey with the Limesurvey GmbH. There you should have it working out of the box. Installing LS usually is quite easy. All my installations worked basically out of the box. However, some server configurations can cause trouble and if that happens, you will need to have at least some basic knowledge of how a server works. Now if you already struggle with giving permissions to the files, I must assume that you have very little to no experience with web servers, am I right?

Help us to help you!
  • Provide your LS version and where it is installed (own server, uni/employer, SaaS hosting, etc.).
  • Always provide a LSS file (not LSQ or LSG).
Note: I answer at this forum in my spare time, I'm not a LimeSurvey GmbH employee.

Ok I have found how to change the directory permissions.

So to follow the Installation instructions: The "/limesurvey/tmp" directory (and all its subdirectories and files) are used for imports & uploads and should be set to Read & Write for your webserver.

How do I configure the settings for this folder shown in the attachment?

I have asked hostgator support and they are not helpful!

Thanks again
