Is there a way to change the input text box with a textarea when we are using a "other" option?

No, I don't think so. What you can do is to write just "other" as a normal answer item and via condition or relevance equation you open up a new comment field if the respondent marked the "other" option. This means two questions, but we use this quite a lot. I think it is even cleaner than the approach with the input text box.

I suggest that to my client but he was looking for a textarea instead of input box.

But that is what I am saying: You can have a text area, if you split it up into two questions, a multiple choice question with an option called "other" (just a normal item, not the actual other option from limesurvey) and then you add a question with "huge text".

Of course, the client might complain that it is a two question approach...

Or you could try to increase the size of the input text via CSS. Not sure if this is working and it won't change anything about the limitation in characters, which I think is 256 for the text input.
