I've had a look through the questions in here and in the manual as well and couldn't find an answer so apologise if I've missed something obvious.

Basically I want a question like "who is your favourite comedian?" where the answer can either be selected from a dropdown.

At the beginning of the survey the dropdown list would be empty and there would be a freetext field where participents can type their own comedian in. What they type in would then be added to the drop down list for other users in the future who take the quiz.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

This is nothing that Limesurvey offers out of the box. You would have to do something with custom coding here.
