The default option for attribute are set in core: application/helpers/common_helper.php : function questionAttributes

on application\helpers\admin\statistics_helper.php

add on function createChart for any question type the following line:

if($sQuestionType=="L") { $type=1;}

For public statistics you can define whether to use bar chart or pie chart. From my point of view it might make sense to also use that value for admin statistics, so feel free to post a feature request/bug ticket at the bugtracker .
