Viewing Encrypted Table Data

I have turned on field level encryption for a number of fields in our survey. My understanding is that the content would be encrypted in the backend database, but decrypted for viewing in LimeSurvey. This isn't the case and the content is unreadable in LimeSurvey.

Just checking whether this is expected behaviour, or am I doing something wrong.

I have also tried exporting but having the same issue. This is on a local installion, not cloud.
