Limesurvey as a CAPI tool was created by Tom_Kossow
Hello everyone,

we are planning a survey for a small charity where interviewers are conducting 5-10 personal interviews. We have the idea that it would be practical and cost effective if the interviewers would use their handys for the interview so that they (or us) wouldnt have to transcript the questionaires. I have used limesurvey for an online survey in the (distant) past and would like to know if there are experiences with it as a CAPI tool.

My idea would be that i construct the questionaire online and send 5-10 unique invites to the respective interviewer. They would conduct one interview after the other and the data goes directly to me. Is this possible and feasible with limesurvey? We have some money for advanced features but not very much. Overall we are planning to conduct 500-800 interviews (we have lots of volunteers).

Another question is regarding the data. If i remember correctly limesurvey has some build in analysis tools but i would like to analyse the data with more advanced statistical software like SAS/STATA/SPSS/R etc. It is possible to export the data to at least some of them, right?

Sadly i have very limited time since the interviews are planned to go through very soon. I would be very glad for any experiences/input you can give me.

Best regards,
Tom

Hi,
what's the difference of a person typing his own answers or the answers of an interviewed person?
He enters the answers in a browser window.
That's no problem.

but i would like to analyse the data with more advanced statistical software like SAS/STATA/SPSS/R etc.

Yes, please do that.
Here in the demo installation you might have seen that there are these export formats

and SPSS

CAPI online or offline? Offline can be done via www.offlinesurveys.com/ in combination with LimeSurvey.

If your field interviewer conduct the CAPI online, you can work with a TOKEN-URL per Interviewer.
You mail that via E-Mail to your field interviewer. That token would be used for every conducted interview.
There are no special CAPI features in the generic LimeSurvey installation.

IMO the queXS solution is a bit too sophisticated

queXS can operate your outbound telephone research centre. It integrates with the Asterisk VoIP Server,

As Tom said his volunteers run around and conduct a few interviews.
In this case his idea to assign a few tokens to each interviewer will work fine. Just open the browser and do it.

Of course you may think of an offline solution (offlinesurveys.com).
I should say, this depends on your questionnaire (and the availability of the internet) . There are some really useful additional question types for use with smartphones.
On the other side each volunteer has to install the app, get the credentials to install the questionnaire in the app.
And it is limited to Android.

As usual the best thing is to try. Tom may create a token based survey and conduct it on his smartphone.
If he feels fine with the result his volunteers hopefully will feel the same.

Why paper? Where do you read something about paper based interviews?

I think it was because of this phrase.

so that they (or us) wouldnt have to transcript the questionaires

No need to be sorry. Sometimes the P in CAPI is read as paper. I was a bit confused.

Paper interviews are still used today. Nobody steals paper, but devices handed out are get "lost" quite easy ;-)
As long as the interviewer use their own device you might have a issue with dataprotection but not with lost devices.

Hey thanks for the great input! So it seems its not a problem. Thats great! The interviewers would use their own smartphones. Gladly everybody has one in this day and age. I have one additional little question. Ive seen some optimized layouts for Handys which you have to pay for. They are not that expensive so it would be ok, but are the "normal" layouts not convienient for Handys?

Thanks again for your replys. Much appreciated.

You do not need to buy a theme. The core themes work perfectly well on mobile devices.
