Every time I want to switch the type for an answer from "long free text" to "array" (or sth. else) it doesn't work and switches back to long free text after changing it... Any help?

No, not really.
You do not help us to help you by answering the initial questions and give further informations (scrfeenshot?)

What means "it switches back"?
Does the button (version 5.x.) resp. the drop-down (version 3.x.) where you select they question type switch back right after you clicked it?

Does your selection switch back after you saved the question? I hope you saved it.

Or do you talk about the default question type that is preselected when you create a new question?
In version 5.x. this is adaptable in your settings.

So, please, give the necessary informations.

thanks for your reply! When I select the button change question type and click on the option array (5 point choice) for example, nothing happens. By that I mean, that I only get the text box which I get for long free text as well. When I click on save and preview question, I can only see the exact same text box like in the option for "long free text". So I can't change the question type for some reason, it's pretty weird..

My version is 5.2.13

This only shows that you don't use the HTML-editor but the source code editor.

Your screenshot shows that you have a 5 point array, so it did not switch back to long free text.

What you are seeing is the box to put your question text for your 5 point array...

There you type your question text, then you add subquestions and answer options and save your 5 point array question. Oh, in the 5 point array question you can't even add your answer options, because they are already pre defined as 5 points, I guess.

But to me, on the screenshot, everything looks fine. You just need to save the question when you are done.

yeah that's true - I can switch the question type, but after switching it to no matter what type of question, there is still only one question box for long free text and there is no possibility to add any sub questions.

at first when adding a new question you should see this (source code editor)
 

And this is not a question box for "long free text", it is the general box to enter the question text.
Switch your editor type to HTML-Editor in your account to see.
 

  
After changing the question type to "array (5-point)"
there should appear the entry fields of subquestions (5-point-array has predefined answer options)
 
  
And if you select a "normal" array this (with answer options)
 

Now, what did you do so far?
Did you enter the text of the question into the box as I did?
And did you save this question?

As Joffm explains, this is correct as far as we can see.

1. Choose your question type array
2. You put the general question text for the array question (matrix in German) into the text box (you can save at this point, but you don't need to
3. Go to subquestions below the text box, put in the subquestions
4. Switch to answer options and put them in (for normal array, for array 5 point you can't choose answer options, they are predefined)
5. Save your question

Here how it looks in LS 5.3.32+220817 for me:
