Why LTS version is still 3.X ? was created by josesiqueira
Hello everyone, José here, first time I post, don't know if right place, but I have a question.

In my organization people are still using version 3.X claiming it is the LTS version, so they won't change it.
My everyday use of LimeSurvey resides on 5.X version.

Is there any reason to stay in version 3.X ? maybe 4.X for LTS?

Best regards,
José

Version 4.X is no longer in support nor in development.
We have version 3 and version 5 in support.
Version 3 is only getting a few fixes and patched.
Version 5 is in full development and gets new features.

Labeling version 3 as LTS makes sense.
You normally don't add features to a LTS version.
Version 6 is not there.

Thank you for you kind reply, sir!

I totally forgot about version 4.X is no longer in development.

I hope version 5 is labeled as LTS soon :)

Version 4.X is no longer in support nor in development.

Well, not entirely correct. ;-)

LS 4.x is still in development, it is just called 5.x now. (Afaik LS 4.x was renamed to LS 5.x for technical reasons).

I answer at the LimeSurvey forum in my spare time, I'm not a LimeSurvey GmbH employee.

The SemVer concept is used for the version numbers.

LimeSurvey 5 had an incompatible API in comparison to LimeSurvey 4 at some point.
So 5.0.0 was needed.
MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH, increment the:
MAJOR version when you make incompatible API changes,
MINOR version when you add functionality in a backwards compatible manner, and
PATCH version when you make backwards compatible bug fixes.

The codebase is containing LS3 to LS5, but only LS3 (LTS), LS5 and Cloudeditions are released and supported.

LimeSurvey 4 is no longer in development or support.

Hi everyone, thanks for these clarifications, they are very useful.
In any case, does anyone know if there is a forecast to release an LTS version of LS5?

You can check
manual.limesurvey.org/LimeSurvey_roadmap
for any updates around LimeSurvey.

The focus of the development seem to lay on implementing an easier to use inteface.
Personally I don't expect LS3 to be EOL in 2022 and I don't expect a LS6 in 2022.

Currently LS3 cannot run under PHP 8.1 because Yii 1.X is not 100% compatible.
github.com/yiisoft/yii/issues/4385
It looks like that can be fixed in 2022, so that LS3 can run on PHP 8.1.
If that will not be the case, the end for LS3 would be when PHP 8 becomes EOL (currently 26th Nov 2023).

I don't see a LTS version of LS5 in the next 12 months.
