Design Issue: Structuring a Letter Boxed–Style Interactive Word Puzzle UI

Hi everyone,I’m currently facing a design challenge while working on a web-based word puzzle concept inspired by letterboxedpuzzle.com/ , and I’d like some guidance from the community. The main idea is to create an interactive layout where letters are placed around a box and users form words under specific constraints (like chaining letters and avoiding invalid patterns). The concept is simple, but the design part is getting tricky. The issue I’m running into:
I’m not sure how to properly structure the UI and interaction flow so that:
• The letter layout stays visually balanced and consistent
• User interactions feel smooth and intuitive
• The constraint-based rules don’t make the interface confusing
• The design remains scalable if more rules are added later
I’ve been experimenting with different layout approaches, but it’s difficult to balance clarity, responsiveness, and interaction feedback in a clean way. What I’m trying to figure out:
• How do you design constraint-heavy interactive UIs without overwhelming users?
• Any best practices for visual feedback when users make valid/invalid moves?
• Should the focus be more on simplicity in UI or clarity of rules?
• How do you usually approach designing puzzle-like interfaces in general?
I’ve seen similar ideas discussed in platforms like Figma during prototyping, but I’m looking more for practical UX/design strategies rather than tooling.Would really appreciate any insights or examples from people who’ve worked on game-like or interactive UI systems. Thanks in advance!
