About 13 in 100 adult women in the general population develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Women who inherit a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation face a much higher risk. Out of every 100 woman with a mutation, 70 develop breast cancer by age 80. Suppose that a BRCA genetic test is available for free or fully covered by your insurance. You can either test positive or negative. A positive result would mean that you have a BRCA mutation, and hence at increased risk of developing cancer during your lifetime, while a negative result would imply that you do not carry any of the mutations, and therefore at low risk of breast cancer, similar to that of the general population (that is, 13%). Suppose that the test is accurate to some degree. For instance, if it is 80% accurate, this means that if you have the mutation, the test will detect it 80% of the time.
