I am a Master II student from the Solvay Brussels School of Economics & Management at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). I created this survey because I am interested in understanding leaders’ emotions in the workplace. You will be presented with a scenario describing an imaginary leader, and will be asked to answer questions on a scale from 1 to 7. Please do not use your own experience to answer the questions, but stick to the scenario instead.

This questionnaire will take approximatively 10 minutes to be completed. Note that you are not expected to have any particular knowledge of the business context in which the survey is set.

In this scenario you will take on the role of one of the team members led by John, who is a 51 years old manager. He has been working as a team leader of his department composed of 48 employees for the past 11 years. John is described as a sympathetic manager. You know that he is in a happy marriage and has 3 children, for which is he very grateful. You also know that John is involved in a series of activities such as squash and playing the guitar, and he really enjoys himself while doing those.

One day, John comes to you with a request: you made a mistake in one of your report, and he asks pleasantly to correct it. After explaining gently the mistake, he seems optimistic about your capability to correct it. At the end of the day when you hand in the corrected report, he seems delighted and wishes you a “very good evening” with a big smile.

You do not have any knowledge of his personal life, such as marriage or children, and you do not know what he does once he leaves the office.

One day, John comes to you, annoyed, with a demand: you made a mistake in one of your report, and he asks furiously to correct it. He is about to yell, and you can really feel that he is angry and resentful that you made this mistake. He explains the mistake and frowns: he seems to be doubting your skills. At the end of the day, when you hand in the corrected report, he still seems mad and asks you abruptly to “never do that mistake again”
