In this task, you will play through 48 trials with anonymous players (Proposers)
During each trial, you will receive a proposition from the Proposers on how to divide a sum of 1.00$ between you and an anonymous partner. Your partner will be the one that proposes how to divide the sum. You must decide to ACCEPT or the REFUSE he proposal.
If you ACCEPT, the money will be divided between you and the Proposer as he has decided.
If you REFUSE, neither you nor the Proposer will receive money ( 0.00$ each).
After each offer, you will be asked to indicate your level of satisfaction using a slider scale.
When the game begins, you will first see a fixation cross (to center your gaze on where an image will appear) followed by the face of the Proposer.
After that, you will be shown a picture of the offers. You are represented by a GREEN square. At the beginning of each round, you will be randomly paired with a new partner represented by a BLUE square. This screen indicates that this new partner is preparing to send you a proposal for dividing the 1.00$.
Afterward, you see the proposal. For this round, your anonymous partner (the blue square) will propose that he keep (0.70$) and you (green square) will be offered (0.30$).
Remember that if you ACCEPT the proposal, you and your partner will receive a sum of money that corresponds to the proposed division (you will get 0.30$ and your partner will get 0.70$). If you REFUSE the proposal, neither you nor your partner will receive any money (you will each get 0$). This ends the round and a new round begins soon afterward.
Each round will be like the previous example but with a new partner.
During later trials, you will also be asked the emotions of the Proposer.
PAYMENT: Among all the participants, we will randomly pick 2 rounds (the winners will be contacted via e-mail). If one of your rounds is selected, you will be paid according to the sum of money you and your partner obtained during this round. Since each round could be selected for payment, we invite you to take each decision assuming that the proposed sum will be your real payment.
During each round, you will divide a sum of 1.00$ with an anonymous partner. Your partner will decide of the division. If you ACCEPT the offer, you and your partner will receive a sum of money that corresponds to the division. If you REFUSE the offer, you and your partner will both get 0.00$. this process will be repeated with a new partner during each round.
Your potential payment will depend on the decisions you take during this task. Please, consider each round as if it was the one that determined your payment (as if the sum was really at stake).

- Project’s objectives
The current project aims at increasing our understandingof how peope process social information (emotion faces, for instances) and how it relates to their personality traits and life haits as assessed through different survey questions.
- Participation in the current project
Your participation in this project is completely free and voluntary. If you accept to take part in this project, you will be asked to answer a few psychological questionnaires and take part in 2 experimental tasks. You will also be asked to answer some demographic questions.
Your participation in this project is completely anonymous and should take between 30 to 40 minutes of your time. There are no right or wrong answers. Participations in the study can only be done online.
- Costs and disadvantages
It is possible you may experience mild emotional discomfort as it may trigger certain negative emotions or thoughts. If that is the case, do not hesitate to contact the researcher.
- BENEFITS AND RISKS
In participating in this project, you help increase scientific knowledge in the field of social perception in Psychology. Upon completion of the questionnaire, you will receive your compensation in your Amazon’s Mechanical Turk account: 1.00$ for base payment and a possible additional 1.00$ based on your performance on one of the tasks.
This survey may contain disturbing information and trigger distression memories for some participants.If this causes you any issue, you may refuse to partake in the current study. A list of mental health ressources will be available to participants.
- CONFIDENTIALITY
The answers you provide in the questionnaire will remain completely anonymous. We will not ask you personal questions which could lead to your identification and you will not be asked to identify yourself at any point in the experiment.
The answers to the questions will be saved in a computer which is locked by a password. The platform on which you complete the questionnaire (LimeSurvey) does not know what information is being collected and does not access the information. The information belongs to the researcher and is controlled by the researcher. LimeSurvey ensures security of the data through fire wall protection. LimeSurvey can only be accessed by the researcher and her director as it is protected by a password.
The information will be kept for 7 years following the start of the project.
- COMPENSATION
You will be paid up to 2.00$ upon completion of the questionnaire: 1.00$ for base payment and a possible additional 1.00$ based on your performance on one of the tasks. After sending your answers, you will be given a code to enter in Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. Once the code is received by the researcher, the money will be deposited in your account.
- VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION AND RIGHT TO WITHDRAW
Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. Feel free to not complete the questionnaire if you wish not to at any point. You may simply close the internet window; we will not demand justifications from you. Once the questionnaire is completed, you will be asked again if you wish the send your answers. Sending your answers will tell the researchers that you are consenting to participating in the current project.
- Participation in future studies
The data collected in this study may be used in future research projects. Any research project using your data will be evaluated on the merits of its scientific nature and its ethics. In consenting to participate to the current sutdy, you agree that your data may be used in future projects on the condition that they have obtained the approval of an ethicss committee.

Project’s objectives
The current project aims at increasing our understanding of how people process social information (emotional faces, scenarios,etc) and how it relates to their personality traits and life habits as assessed through different survey questions.
Use of deception
During one our task you were expected to predict the feelings other participants regarding shame and devaluation.
Actually, the answers from the other individual(s) were controlled by the experimenters and there were no real other individual(s). In this study, we needed to be able to present you with certain types of social information and test if this information could influence your behavior. Hence, we needed you to believe that you actually were guessing for other individuals. The Ultimatum Game offers were also controlled by the experimenter, there was no actual proposer. Since we used deception, instead of receiving an additional payment based on your choice in the Ultimatum Game, you will receive another 1.00$ regardless of your performance in the Ultimatum Game.
It is possible you may experience emotional reactions to the fact that we used deception, do not hesitate to contact the researcher through the Forum created for the project. This will ensure anonymity is maintained.
3. VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION AND RIGHT TO WITHDRAW
After having been informed about the use of deception, you may decide to withdraw your agreement to participate. You will still be paid 2,00$ but your data will be destroyed and not be used in our study. Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. Sending your answers will tell the researchers that you are consenting to participating in the current project.
As was stated previously, the data collected in this study may be used in future research projects. Any research project using your data will be evaluated on the merits of its scientific nature and its ethics. In consenting to participate to the current study, you agree that your data may be used in future projects on the condition that they have obtained the approval of an ethics committee.
